What do I need to know about BMD?

Bone mineral densitometry (BMD) is a study that uses x-ray technology to determine bone mineral content. The lower spine or hips are often targeted to diagnose osteoporosis or osteopenia.

What to Remember:

  • An appointment is required for a bone density study.
  • Please arrive 15 mins prior to your appointment time. If you are late, your appointment may need to be rebooked.
  • It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing, preferably without zippers, belts or buttons if possible. You could be asked to remove clothing or change into a gown.
  • Do not consume calcium supplements for at least 24 hours prior to the appointment.
  • If you’ve recently had a medical imaging study with contrast dye injection or oral barium contrast, please call our clinic at
416-763-4331 to speak to a receptionist prior to your appointment.
  • Remove jewelry, eyewear, or any metallic objects in the area being imaged so they do not interfere with interpretation.
